Adding a new dog to your family can be incredibly exciting, but this decision also comes with a lot of responsibility. Getting your little furball acclimated to their new home can feel like an incredibly daunting task, especially for new pet owners. Luckily, AVC is here to help. Check out these five tips for first time pup owners, and make sure to let us know which one is the most helpful for you
1. Create a Puppy Safe Space.
For new pups, adjusting to a different space can take a little bit of time. Invest in some baby gates to create smaller areas around the house for your dog to hang out in during the day (preferably somewhere without carpet or nice furniture). This way, any accidents can be easily managed and you can keep any puppy mischief to a confined area!
2. Build a Routine.
Your new little furball needs structure to be able to behave like a good little guy or gal. Be sure to create a consistent schedule for your pup that includes feeding, playtime, training, and potty. Accomplishing this will lead to fewer behavioral problems and an overall sense of security for your new pet!
3. Choose the Right Food.
What your pup eats is crucial to their health, but there are lots of options for dog food out there. Consult us at AVC about what options exist for your canine, and then make an informed decision that fits your dog’s needs.
4. Take Some Time for Training.
Every pup needs training. By teaching your little furball some basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” you will create the foundations of good behavior and enhance the speical bond that you and your dog share. For extra training tips, make sure to give us a call or consult us right here at AVC!
5. Ask AVC For Help!
Taking care of a new pup can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task, but you are not alone. Our dedicated caretakers at AVC are here for you. Be sure to schedule regular visits with us to monitor your dog’s health, and never fear to give us a call with any questions you might have!
